Chiefs get Rashee Rice back from injury for Broncos game

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Rashee Rice, the Kansas City Chiefs' top receiver, is expected to return to the lineup for Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos.

Rice participated in each of the Chiefs' three practices this week and is returning from a strained right hamstring, an injury he suffered in Week 4 against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Without Rice the past two games, the Chiefs' offense hasn't been as effective as it was earlier in the season. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes didn't throw a touchdown pass in either game, and the Chiefs' collection of receivers -- Xavier Worthy, rookie Cyrus Allen, Justin Watson, Andrew Armstrong and Jalen Royals -- recorded just six receptions for 39 yards in last week's loss to the Seahawks.

In four games this season, Rice has produced 13 receptions on 16 targets for 190 yards and a touchdown.

"He's such a physical receiver," Mahomes said Wednesday of Rice. "He does a great job within the zone concepts at getting himself open, as well as being physical versus man [coverage]. Having him back out there will be big for us because it'll help take some pressure off the other guys to make plays and let them go out there and be themselves. Hopefully, we can have some success."

On defense, the Chiefs could be without rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane, their top draft pick, who is listed as questionable.

Delane missed practice Thursday and Friday with a right shoulder injury, the same injury he aggravated three snaps into the season-opening win over the Broncos following an interception before missing Week 2.

After Friday's practice, Reid said he didn't know what Delane's status was for Sunday's rematch. Delane first sustained his injury in the offseason, as he missed the Chiefs' mandatory minicamp in June because of a hairline fracture in his scapula, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

"We'll just see how he does here going forward," Reid said of Delane.

Rookie defensive end R Mason Thomas also missed Friday's practice for a personal reason. Reid, though, said the Chiefs expect Thomas to play against the Broncos.

"He'll meet us there in Denver," Reid said of Thomas.
