Selangor captaincy battle between Shahrom and Razman for 2016 MSL

Reigning Malaysia Cup champions Selangor will decide on their captain for the 2016 Malaysia Super League (MSL) season next week.

Mohd Shahrom Kalam wore the armband when the Red Giants won their 33rd Malaysia Cup title last month by defeating Kedah 2-0 in the final. But the arrival of ex-Pahang skipper Mohd Razman Roslan means that new coach Zainal Abidin Hassan has a decision to make.

Razman was in charge under Zainal at Pahang as they won the 2013 and 2014 Malaysia Cups.

"I'm happy to have two players with excellent leadership qualities," Zainal told The Star after training at the Shah Alam Mini Stadium.

"The management will make a decision on the skipper next week."

The favourite could be Razman who served Zainal so well during the latter's four years on the coaching staff of Pahang. He also excelled for the Malaysia XI in last July's match against English giants, Liverpool.

Razman had a decade as a Selangor player before his successful stint in Kuantan.

"It's good to be back ... I expect stiff competition for places," Razman said. "This is normal for footballers and I have no qualms as to who gets to wear the captain's armband. We're a team and I'll abide by the decision of the management."

Razman is joined by former Pahang teammates Khairul Azhan Khaled (goalkeeper), R. Gopinathan (winger) and Hafiz Kamal (midfield) at Shah Alam Stadium this season.

2015 captain Shahrom said: "It won't be easy to defend the Malaysia Cup, but we will be ready for the challenge. The stiff competition for places will make us stronger."

Selangor will face MSL champions Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) in the season opening Charity Shield on Feb. 13.
