Panthers' Aleksander Barkov avoids surgery; out 6-8 weeks

Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov won't require surgery to rehab his lower-body injury and is expected to be available again within six to eight weeks.

Panthers coach Paul Maurice delivered the positive update after Florida's practice on Tuesday, following speculation that Barkov could be sidelined for up to three months.

"That's our best window," said Maurice on Barkov's new recovery timeline. "Could be a little less, could be a little more."

Florida's top center was hurt during the club's game against San Jose on Oct. 1. Barkov tumbled awkwardly onto his left leg midway through the second period while fighting for a puck along the boards with Sharks defenseman Darnell Nurse. Barkov was down on the ice briefly before heading to Florida's dressing room; he appeared to throw his gloves angrily aside on the way down their tunnel. The Panthers eventually lost the game without him, falling 4-3 in overtime.

Barkov was subsequently placed on Long Term Injured Reserve, indicating he would miss at least 10 games, but the trajectory on a return might have been longer considering how severe the injury looked in real time.

This is another tough setback for Barkov, who missed the entire 2025-26 season with right knee ACL and MCL tears he suffered in a preseason training session. The three-time Selke Trophy winner is an integral part of Florida's offense and helped guide the Panthers on championship runs in 2024 and 2025. Barkov has recorded zero points in two games so far this season.

Still, Barkov won't let any lack of early-season production dim optimism about a hopeful outcome on his return to action.

"He's our captain and we miss him," Maurice said. "He feels it when he's not around. He's probably the happiest of all of us [with the recovery timeline]."
