Chicago Bears safety Coby Bryant underwent knee surgery and is expected to miss four to six months, coach Ben Johnson announced Tuesday.
The Bears are hoping that Bryant, who signed a three-year, $40 million contract in free agency in March, can return later in the season or during the playoffs.
Bryant hyperextended his knee and sustained a bone bruise and small fracture, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter when the injury originally happened earlier this month. Sources at that time had said surgery wasn't expected to be needed.
Bryant was injured during one-on-one drills in the first padded practice of training camp.
