Max Scherzer allowed four runs and four hits in five innings in the 500th appearance -- and 491st start -- of his career Wednesday against the Orioles in Baltimore.
Just how many more he makes is now the question.
Scherzer said after the game that he'll likely have something to say in the next couple days about his future.
The 42-year-old right-hander said he hopes he can come back on short rest to pitch again Sunday in the season finale for a Blue Jays team that officially was eliminated from the postseason race after dropping Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader to Baltimore, 4-2 -- a year after winning the American League pennant.
Scherzer dropped to 3-9 with a 6.14 ERA, pointing a finger at his performance this year as a reason the Blue Jays underachieved.
"Instead of pointing the finger at everybody else, I'll point the finger at myself and what I've done this year," he told reporters. "I wasn't necessarily good in the first half. I've been better here in the second half, but on a day like today when we lose a ball game, I got beat on one pitch here. I feel like I've said that a lot, but that's the big leagues."
