The New York Mets have offloaded a third relief pitcher at the trade deadline, moving right-hander Luke Weaver to the Pittsburgh Pirates, a source told ESPN's Jorge Castillo on Monday.
Infield prospect Sammy Stafura is going to New York in the deal, according to multiple reports.
The addition of Weaver, who is in the first season of a two-year, $22-million deal, signals an unusually aggressive financial push by the typically frugal Pirates, who are looking to end a decade-long playoff drought.
The Pirates, whose bullpen has faltered repeatedly as they've gone 2-7 in their last nine games, are 3½ games out of the final spot in a crowded National League wild card race.
Weaver had a 1.84 ERA with 45 strikeouts and allowed just three home runs in 44 innings for the Mets. He is signed for the 2027 season at $12.5 million.
Weaver dominated against right-handed hitters, who hit .099 against him. Overall, teams are hitting .162 against him. He's allowed just one earned run in his last 30 games.
The trade for Weaver is the second significant acquisition by the Pirates around the deadline. Pittsburgh brought in former All-Star reliever Camilo Doval from the New York Yankees on Saturday.
Earlier Monday, the Mets traded fellow relievers Brooks Raley to the Phillies and Huascar Brazoban to the White Sox.
