Hyrox athlete who soiled herself: Uproar 'a hard situation'

Joanna Wietrzyk, the Hyrox athlete who soiled herself, has spoken about how difficult she found the controversy around the incident.

Wietrzyk won the women's pro race at the Hryox Elite 15 event in Beijing, China, in September despite faeces visible on her leg.

She later apologised for continuing, and forfeited her victory and prize points, while Hyrox implemented a new rule to give race directors the power to disqualify an athlete if blood, vomit, urine or faeces creates a welfare or contamination risk.

Australian athlete Wietrzyk will be back in action at the Hyrox event in Germany on Friday, but has broken her silence on her previous controversy via a video on social media.

"I've had some time to reflect over the past six to eight weeks on everything that happened in Beijing," she said. "Firstly I just want to say that I'm truly, truly so sorry to everyone that I affected -- whether they were spectators or participants out on that race floor -- for my decision to choose to continue to race.

"Having that time to reflect, I've really learned a lot from the situation and I am very, very sorry for it all.

"But I also want to say thank you to every person who has reached out for support, and given me this overwhelming amount of support, over the past couple of weeks.

"It's been a very hard situation to navigate for me. And very confronting, as well. So all the support, whether it was personally or through my team, has been honestly so incredible. It goes a lot longer than I can truly express right now."

Hyrox is a Germany-based format which blends fitness and racing. Athletes combine eight 1km runs, and eight workout stations, in an event. Wietrzyk is the world record holder in the women's solo event.
