Miranda is a great signing for Inter and can help spark an immediate revival

When the dust settles and the transfer window has closed, Miranda signing for Inter Milan will perhaps not be at the top of anybody's list when it comes to reviewing the summer's business.

While it ranks low when it comes to shock value or even in fiscal terms, it should place high when it comes to sense. The Nerazzurri have identified one of their major weaknesses and picked the right man to help them solve it.

This is Inter's third defensive signing before July 1 (they tied up a deal for Jeison Murillo earlier in the year and secured a two-year loan of Barcelona's Martin Montoya this week), and Miranda will arrive with a solid reputation. He has been instrumental in Atletico Madrid's success over the past few seasons and will certainly bring an element of resoluteness to the Nerazzurri's frail back line.

Inter conceded 48 goals last term; the centre-back position was certainly one that boss Roberto Mancini wanted to address quickly once the season ended.

The Brazilian is exactly what Inter need. He is experienced, at his peak and unlike Murillo, he is not a player who will need to grow into the role. He is compact and careful and can physically dominate opposition strikers.

Miranda also likes to play deep and invite crosses as he knows that aerially he is superior to most he comes up against. This will be a huge advantage to the Nerazzurri, who were incredibly weak in the air this season.

In La Liga, Miranda won 29 tackles (a success rate of 49 percent) and made 37 interceptions, 130 clearances and 10 blocks last season, along with 77 percent passing accuracy, three goals and one assist. He has been tracked by some of the top clubs in Europe and it is something of a coup for Inter to acquire his services.

The question that many who frequent San Siro will be asking is why Atletico are willing to let such a prized asset leave?

Atletico are perhaps one of a few teams in Europe who could let him go and not be affected too much by his departure. Firstly, they have in-house replacements in Diego Godin and Jose Maria Gimenez. The latter got more playing time when Miranda was injured last term and showed great potential, excelling in his partnership with Godin.

Injuries are another smaller justification that boss Diego Simeone can cite, as the Brazilian had two hamstring issues in 2014-15 -- the kind of injuries that tend to only get worse over time.

That also points to the third reason; his age. Miranda is 31 in September and while he is not over the hill, he is a player for Inter's present and not the future. Finally, his contact was also expiring, meaning this summer was Atletico's last real chance to cash in on him for a good fee at €15 million.

Although these issues are valid for the Spanish side, Miranda fits perfectly with Inter and their model. They are reinforcing their defence in a sensible and intelligent way and have signings in Murillo and Miranda who represent the future and the immediate.

In particular, Miranda will bring a sense of security and finesse the team are aching for.
