Leicester's England U21 international Matt Hampson remains in intensive care after suffering a neck injury during training yesterday.
The following statement was issued by the Northampton General Hospital this morning.
"We can confirm that Matt Hampson is a patient on our intensive care unit. He was admitted on Tuesday, following an injury sustained whilst at an England Under-21 training session at Franklin's Gardens.
"The medical teams are currently assessing Matt's condition and agreeing his treatment plan. Matt's parents are with him and the family wish to thank everyone for their concerns and good wishes.
A further statement this afternoon read: ``The medical teams have assessed Matt's condition and the treatment plan is for him to be transferred to Stoke Mandeville Hospital for an operation to reduce and stabilise the fracture in his neck.
``Following this operation Matt will be coming back to Northampton for further care.
``Matt's parents are with him. The family wish to thank everyone for their concerns and good wishes and hope you will respect their privacy at this time.''
Hampson suffered the injury during an Under-21 scrummage session at Northampton's Franklin's Gardens and was due to have surgery last night to realign his neck using traction.
The 20-year-old was treated immediately after the incident on the pitch before being transferred by ambulance to the intensive care unit of Northampton General Hospital.
The RFU released a brief statement and England Under-21 manager Pete Drewett said: ``Our immediate concerns are with Matt and his family.
``He is getting the best treatment available and we aim to make a further announcement following his operation.''
Hampson has been a regular in the England squad for the Under-21 Six Nations and he started at tight-head in last week's victory over Italy.
He was busy preparing for Friday's final match, against Scotland in Northampton, when the accident occurred.
Hampson had been targeted as a player with a bright future after signing for Leicester's Academy at Under-16 level.
He became an apprentice at the beginning of the 2001-02 season and is one of five development squad players who trained with the Leicester first team during the summer.
