Combined Pacific XV given go-ahead

Fiji, Tonga and Samoa's best will play in a combined Pacific Islands team against Australia, New Zealand and South Africa in 2004.

The International Rugby Board has approved the idea, modelled on the concept of the British and Irish Lions, and after next year's battles against the Wallabies, All Blacks and Springboks, the team will also tour the northern hemisphere in 2005.

"It is exciting news for rugby in the Pacific and potentially represents a step into the big time," Pacific Islanders Rugby Alliance Chief Executive Charlie Charters told Reuters.

The PIRA had originally applied to the IRB to have the concept established last year, but while the initial request was vetoed, the support of Australian Rugby Union boss John O'Neill and the rest of the southern hemisphere nations helped this approval.
