Van Niekerk named SA Player of the Yearur

Springbok 'Big Joe' van Niekerk has been honoured with the SA Player of the Year award.

The Lions loose forward collected the prize at a ceremony in Sandton on Thursday night.

The other nominations for the top honour by were Werner Greef, Andre Pretorius, Lawrence Sephaka and Jannes Labuschagne.

However there was consulation for Sephaka who was named the Players' Player of the Year.

Corne Krige and Kennedy Tsimba were named the Super 12 Player of the Year and Currie Cup player of the year respectively.

The Blue Bulls' young star Pedrie Wannenburg was named most Promising Player of the Year whilst Brent Russell took the honour as top 7s player.

Werner Greef's try for the Springboks against the Wallabies scooped the Try of the Year Award.

The Baby Boks U21 squad won the award for outstanding achievement follwoing their success in the Junior World Cup and both retiring Boks Mark Andrews and Andre Venter were also honoured during the evening.

Sevens coach Chester Williams put a turbulent few days behind him when he was recognised for his contribution to Springbok rugby.
