The South African Football Association (SAFA) confirmed on Saturday that Pitso Mosimane is close to being appointed as their new head coach - with only the finalisation of "loose ends" outstanding.
As per the association's statement, Mosimane's appointment was green-lit in principle at a National Executive Committee (NEC) extraordinary meeting on Saturday in Johannesburg.
"The South African Football Association's (SAFA) National Executive Committee has approved the appointment of Pitso Mosimane as the new Bafana Bafana coach," said the statement.
"SAFA held a successful NEC Extraordinary Meeting at SAFA House on Saturday, 8 August 2026 and the Members backed Mosimane to return to the South African senior men's national [team] and replace Hugo Broos, who stepped down a few days ago."
SAFA's statement quoted association president Danny Jordaan as saying: "The NEC has approved the appointment of coach Pitso to Bafana Bafana, but we still need to tie up some loose ends. We will make a formal announcement of the coach next week."
Broos, 74, departed as Bafana Bafana head coach on July 31 after over five years in charge. The Belgian lead South Africa to third place at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) - which Ivory Coast hosted in early 2024 - and the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup.
Mosimane was Carlos Alberto Parreira's assistant coach when Bafana hosted the 2010 World Cup, bowing out after a valiant effort in the group stage. He was subsequently promoted and had an unsuccessful spell in charge thereafter - ending with his dismissal in 2012.
Now 62, Mosimane has redeemed himself with three CAF Champions League titles - one with Mamelodi Sundowns and two with Egypt's Al Ahly, his first club among many as a head coach in the Middle East.
Mosimane confirmed to local media, following the release of his youth football manual in July, that he was open to job offers.
