Exciting Western Australian speedster Mahli Beardman looks set to make his ODI debut against England this month in the absence of Australia's resting big three and the injured Nathan Ellis, while Sam Harper and Lachlan Shaw have earned maiden T20I call-ups alongside recalls for Jake Fraser-McGurk and Mitchell Owen for the five-match T20I series.
Intriguingly, there was no room for Tim David in the ODI squad despite his return to List A cricket for Tasmania last week as part of a bid to play in the 2027 ODI World Cup as a finisher. However, he remains in the T20I squad. Allrounder Liam Scott has been recalled after being left out of the tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa in September while Jack Edwards has also retained his place after debuting in South Africa as an injury replacement.
Australia's selectors have opted to rest Test trio Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins, the ODI skipper, from the three-match series against England to be played on November 13, 15 and 18 in Perth, Adelaide and Hobart. The trio played all three Tests in South Africa and Australia's management will use the next month to give them a "short de-load period". It remains to be seen whether they will play any Sheffield Shield cricket before the first Test against New Zealand in Perth on December 9 given Hazlewood and Cummins have also been rested from the T20I series. Starc has retired from T20I cricket.
Australia will field a severely under-strength ODI attack given Ellis will not be available until the T20I series due to the side strain he suffered in the ODI series in South Africa. Xavier Bartlett, Spencer Johnson will lead the seam attack alongside Beardman, with Edwards and Scott providing back-up, while Adam Zampa has been picked as the lone spinner. Billy Stanlake is also unavailable as he is still recovering from the side strain he suffered on the tour of Zimbabwe.
The T20I squad is also a second-string group with Travis Head, Matthew Renshaw, Josh Inglis, Cooper Connolly and Cameron Green all rested ahead of the four-Test series against New Zealand. It means maiden international opportunities for wicket-keeper batters Harper and Shaw while Fraser-McGurk and Owen have been recalled after absences from the set-up. Joel Davies and Nikhil Chaudhary have retained their places after promising debut showings in Australia's most recent T20I series victory over Bangladesh in Bangladesh in June.
"We are in the middle of a highly demanding phase of our schedule," Chairman of selectors George Bailey said. "Our multi-format players are transitioning directly from the tour of South Africa into an ODI and T20 series, leaving a narrow window to ensure the squad is physically prepared and fresh for the upcoming New Zealand Test series.
"Then, from when the Test players assemble in Perth through to the conclusion of the 150th Anniversary Test against England, the team will have been on the road for more than 100 days.
"To manage this workload, each player's build-up to the New Zealand series will be carefully planned and focussed on individual's physical and mental preparation."
Beardman's inclusion in both the ODI and T20I squad is the most eye-catching coming off an Australia A 50-over tour of India where he decimated a strong India A line-up with his race pace. Beardman has already made his T20I debut in Pakistan earlier this year but is yet to play ODI cricket despite being first called into Australia's squad on the 2024 tour of England.
"Mahli Beardman's recent performances for Australia A were impressive and we are incredibly excited for his return to the national team across the ODI and T20 formats," Bailey said. "We think he can continue to develop into an all-format player across the coming years."
Scott made his ODI debut in Bangladesh in June but was only given one opportunity before being left out of the squad entirely for the six-match tour in Africa. He bowled impressively across both formats on the Australia A tour of India and returns to a bowling allrounder role in the ODI team with Green's bowling availability remaining unknown having not bowled a single ball in a match on the Africa tour due to shoulder and abdominal injuries.
The core of Australia's batting group from the ODI tour of Africa remains for the England series with Ollie Peake retaining his place in the squad while Inglis returns after missing the last two ODIs against South Africa with a fractured finger.
The T20I squad will look entirely different. Fraser-McGurk returns to the international set-up for the first time since July 2025 after sparkling domestic form in the 50-over format. He has scores of 43 not out from 33 balls, 88 from 47, and 122 from 63 in three of his four domestic innings so far this season for South Australia and could open alongside skipper Mitchell Marsh in the absence of Head and Inglis, who opened in Australia's most recent T20I. Owen returns to the squad for the first time since being omitted for the T20 World Cup and the tour of Bangladesh.
"Jake and Mitch return to the T20 side and we believe their ball-striking can be a point of difference in the shorter formats," Bailey said.
"They are good examples of players who have had an opportunity at the International level and have continued working on their game from what they learnt from those experiences."
Harper has been included after earning a call-up to the Test squad for South Africa. He is the reigning BBL player of the season for Melbourne Stars and has spent the winter playing franchise cricket overseas. Shaw's inclusion is a surprise given his limited domestic T20 experience and record. But he was part of Australia A's 50-over team in India in October and has been elevated to the New South Wales 50-over captaincy at just 23.
"Lachie Shaw is a highly talented cricketer we also think will develop quickly and has a powerful game that will impact in the T20 format," Bailey said. "Sam Harper has performed strongly in domestic cricket. He is in a great place with his game right now and is executing his style of cricket consistently, across all formats."
The duo have leapfrogged Josh Philippe who was Inglis' understudy on the recent tours of Pakistan and Bangladesh and also played for Australia A in India in both the red-ball and white-ball teams but has now found himself on the outer with Australia's T20 squad and the New South Wales Sheffield Shield team having not been selected since his return from India.
Aaron Hardie, who is recovering from a shoulder injury, Riley Meredith and Matthew Kuhnemann are the other trio to have not kept their place from the June Bangladesh tour.
