VVS Laxman was born on this day in 1974. But do you remember when he made his Test debut? See if you KNOW YOUR CRICKET.
Ibrahim Zadran: "[Registering a clean sweep] We had a very good series. I'm so happy, you know, with the performance overall. The guys put the energy in each and every game. They have shown that discipline and display in every game. That's why, you know, we won three-nil, and they have played better cricket. [Lot of pressure as a captain?] To be honest, I heard about it, but I didn't think about it [Afghanistan remaining unbeaten against Zimbabwe]. I was just thinking that we would try to go with a positive mindset, intent, and we would just give 100%. Then we cannot think about the result. What we can think, we can think only about the process, which is in our hands. This is what we were doing in every game, and yeah, we just delivered that in every game, and we got the result.
[Ijaz] Was brilliant. He got back to back fifties. I have been watching him in the domestic Shpageeza recently. He batted really well, and the form was there. He trusted himself. He just needed a chance. He got a chance, and he showed his skills. I'm so happy for him that he played better cricket for Afghanistan. Hopefully, he's going to do that in the upcoming games, in the upcoming series. Yeah, guys are there. They are just waiting for their chance. As we have been trying to give them proper chances and to sort out the problem in the spotters.
[How satisfied are you with the team?] I'm very satisfied. There were so many positive things. As you mentioned, we haven't done well in the top order in the first two games. Today we were quite well with the start. But if you look at the middle overs, the way Azmat batted, Ijaz batted, and Rashid finished in the last two games, it was brilliant. That's a positive sign. If you're going to play against top teams, if you cover those areas, then you are not going to struggle. Yes, we didn't have a good series in the top order, but we had a very good start in the past. So we will think about it, and we will try to sort out this area as soon as we can."
Sikandar Raza: "[Learnings from the T20I series] I think the new ball bowling has been fantastic, but I think for us to go forward, we have to understand how to play spinners a lot better, and how to play a swinging ball. So I think if there's two lessons from a batting point of view, it's how to deal with a swinging ball, those guys who swing it, because that has troubled us, and how to play some spin. I think those two lessons need to be learned because every team you play these days has got some swing bowlers and has got some mystery spinners as well. So I think for Zimbabwe to go forward, those are the two areas. And on the plus side, I thought the seam department has done really well.
[Bowling unit doing well] Yeah, certainly. I would like to add Brad Evans there as well. Brad has bowled really well. Credit to Brad as well. Brad does his job with the first change; Brad comes on, bowls the second over as well, bowls the powerplay over as well. He has also been. So I think we are building something here, but I do think that these guys have carried us. Unfortunately, the batting department has let the seam department down as well. But as a team collectively, there has been positives. But for me, the negatives, or should I say, the lessons that we have taken on outweigh the positives that we've had.
[Bundled out for 79 runs] We've been here before. One thing, for as long as I'm playing, I'll never give up on the boys. I know how hard they work, how much effort they put in. Sometimes these lessons are very important for your own personal growth. What I would be encouraging them is try not to waste these opportunities every time you put on the jersey when you've had a bad game and you've had a bad tour. Try and learn from those lessons and try and be better. If Zimbabwe rocks up for the next tour and does exactly the same, that means we haven't taken our lessons from the previous tour, and that's where the real problem starts. A lot of the onus is on the boys as well, but from my side, I'll not give up on these boys. I know they have it in them; they just have to find it, and I have to help them to find it.
[Prep for the Test series] Yeah, the red-ball squad has been training, so the six boys that are not part of the white-ball squad have been training pretty well with the coaching staff as well. So the rest of the boys have had a decent look at the wicket, decent conditions as well these days. So I know the Test match will start in the morning, but I'm very sure that that is a format where everybody, if fit, will be a very evenly contested series."
Player of the Series, Azmatullah Omarzai: "[POTM last match and POTS today] Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim. Happy to get this award. It's my first time getting player of the series, and I want to dedicate this player of the series to my big brother who is always supporting me. He is my coach, personal coach, and that's why I want to dedicate this trophy to him. [Batting and bowling] Honestly, I enjoy my batting always, and whenever I get the opportunity, I want to score more for the team and enjoy my batting and also bowling. But my favorite is batting. That's why I'm enjoying batting more.
[Favorite shot] I think my favorite shot is over mid-off. I love to play that shot. [Lower back niggle after the celebration] We were trying to have fun there, but Sediq was trying to pull me up, and then I went down. That's why my back is paining now. But yeah it's okay now. [APL coming next] It's a great opportunity for the youngsters and for Afghanistan cricket. I want to tell our youngsters who are coming here and playing the APL to make their fitness and give their 100% in domestic and come here, enjoy their cricket, and it will improve our cricket after APL, Inshallah. I hope we have good youngsters in domestic. If they highlight here and they play against good teams and great players, they will learn a lot here, and Inshallah, they will take a lot from here."
Player of the Match, Noor Ahmad: "Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim. It means very special to do well for my country on this stage. Yeah, it's been a long time since this kind of performance came, but this time. I'm grateful to Allah that I did well for the country. [Rashid] We have been chatting a lot, especially in this series. We started working on some specific things, and I think that worked a lot in the game. But it's still not 100%. It's still like 60, 70%. But I need to do a lot of work on that thing to make it 100%. But yeah, I think he is someone that any time I have any doubts in my mind, he's my go-to person, and I'm grateful to have him as a teammate.
[24-yard ball] Even in the game that I bowled the last one and got a wicket, he told me to bowl from far, and I applied that, and I got a wicket. [Hat-trick ball] I think I should have bowled my best ball for the hat-trick. But to be honest, I was struggling a little bit with my hamstring, and like I said, I wasn't 100%, but still, I pushed myself. So Inshallah, next time I'll try to be 100%."
Abdullah Tarakhil: "[Debut match] It was a dream come true when I got the cap from Rashid. I had already texted Rashid Khan back in 2025, telling him that I would soon be sharing the jersey for the national side. I felt so comfortable playing with the team and didn't even feel the pressure of playing an international match. That's certainly a great thing to have as a team.
[Plan to dismiss Raza] Ibrahim, the skipper, and Rashid Khan backed me. I didn't know that I would be bowling inside the power play, but I backed my skill and believed in myself. There was also a little bit of pressure, but I still managed to just stick to my variation and got the very crucial wicket of Sikandar Raza. [Bowling action] If I talk about that, I have also followed fast bowlers. It is my natural action. My coaches have always told me during practice that I should not make changes to it. They tell me that the action I have naturally is very good. So that is the reason. There is nothing particularly special behind it."
8:51 pm The dominance of Afghanistan over Zimbabwe in this format continues as they complete a 3-0 clean sweep of the T20I series. Fifteen runs came off Muzarabani's opening over of the chase, even though Afghanistan lost the wicket of Akram right away, which practically eased any pressure in chasing such a paltry target. Atal then continued his streak of boundaries with classic back-foot punches and cover drives, looking like he was in a hurry. He was dismissed by Masuku for 20 just as Afghanistan were scoring at over nine runs an over, chipping one to point. Masuku struck again in the very same over, trapping Noor plumb in front of the stumps with a delivery that deceived him. Any flicker of hope for Zimbabwe was instantly snuffed out when the incoming batter, Omarzai, launched a massive six that sent the ball flying right out of the ground. At 54 for 3 at the end of the powerplay, Omarzai and skipper Ibrahim guided the team home, with the captain turning aggressive and striking four boundaries off Masuku in the seventh over. To rub salt into the wounds, Marumani dropped a sitter behind the stumps off Omarzai, leaving Muzarabani in absolute disbelief. Omarzai then sealed the deal with a massive six over long on, capping off another brilliant outing for Afghanistan here in the UAE. Ibrahim remained unbeaten on 25 runs, and Omarzai scored 18. The post-match presentation is coming up shortly.
