Andy Murray is through to the semifinals of the Rogers Cup after a 6-4, 6-4 victory against defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Montreal.

The British No.1 looked comfortable throughout against the Frenchman, despite finishing around 1.30am local time following lengthy rain delays in Canada.

Second seed Murray will now face Kei Nishikori for a place in the final, after the Japanese fourth seed defeated Rafael Nadal 6-2, 6-4.

"A lot of the crowd stayed and that really helped me get motivated," Murray told the ATP's official website. "They created a good atmosphere out there and I appreciate everyone staying.

"I passed well. I came up with some good passing shots and that was the difference today."

A break of serve in each set was enough to see Murray oust an unusually error-prone Tsonga, who racked up 28 unforced errors throughout the match.

After the opening four games went with serve, Murray found the breakthrough with a superb forehand, before going on to claim the first set with relative ease.

The Scot, who lost to Tsonga in the quarter-finals last year, survived two break points early in the second set before securing the break at 3-3 with a classy lob.

Tsonga saved the first match point at 5-4 but was powerless to prevent Murray from clinching victory. Should Murray defeat Nishikori and reach Sunday's final, he will move up to second in the world rankings.
