India's Jitu Rai and Prakash Nanjappa were eliminated in the men's 50m pistol qualifying round at the Rio Olympics on Wednesday.

While Jitu finished in the 12th position with a total score of 554, Nanjappa ended in 25th spot with 547 points. The top-eight athletes from the qualification phase advanced to the final.

During the qualification round, each shooter fires 60 shots (six series of 10 shots) in 90 minutes. The qualifications are scored in integer points, with the maximum score per shot being 10 points, and the maximum qualification score being 600 points.

Jitu, who won both a Commonwealth Games and Asian Games gold in the event in 2014, was largely done in by a below-par sixth series in which he shot just 88 points. He shot 92, 95, 90, 94 and 95 respectively in the first five series.

Among the 12-member shooting contingent, only Abhinav Bindra has so far come within striking distance of winning a medal, before losing in a closely-fought shoot-off to finish fourth. In the 10m air pistol, Jitu had shot an overall 78.7 to finish eighth in the field of eight finalists.
