Alloa end Raith's promotion hopes to set up final clash with Dumbarton

Alloa booked their place in the Scottish Championship play-off final as they completed their dismantling of Raith's promotion ambitions with a 2-1 second-leg victory.After earning a goalless draw that denied Raith the title and automatic promotion in the final league game, the Wasps won 2-0 in the first leg of their semi-final to inflict more misery on Rovers. Alloa, who finished 15 points behind Raith in the League One table, took full control of the tie thanks to Jordan Kirkpatrick's brilliant free-kick five minutes before the break. Euan Murray's right-footed effort pulled one back for the hosts, but Ross Stewart found the bottom corner nine minutes from time to secure a 4-1 aggregate win for Alloa and set up a final against Dumbarton.

Alloa beat Raith in play-off first leg

Raith suffered more disappointment at the hands of Alloa after losing 2-0 in their Ladbrokes Championship play-off semi-final first leg. Rovers were pipped to automatic promotion by Ayr on the final day of the League One season, having drawn 0-0 with Alloa, and could not respond against the same opponents following goals from Ross Stewart and Iain Flannigan. Stewart took advantage of a mistake from Graeme Smith to net the opener in the 22nd minute, rolling the ball into the net after the goalkeeper's clearance had cannoned off him, before Flanningan drilled home from 12 yards early in the second half. Things got worse for Alloa when Iain Davidson was sent off for a second yellow card eight minutes from time.

Ayr moved three points clear at the top of Scottish League 1 with a 3-0 win over Raith.There was never much doubt about this result from the moment Lawrence Shankland put Ayr ahead in the 14th minute, converting after Raith failed to clear the ball.A brilliant effort from Robbie Crawford doubled the lead in the 21st minute, crashing a fierce effort in off the crossbar.The Honest Men had a chance to make it three midway through the second half, but Michael Moffat skied a penalty, though they did add to the scoreline deep into injury time when Craig Moore headed home.

Dumbarton advanced to the semi-finals of the Irn-Bru Cup on Saturday with a 2-0 triumph over League One Raith.The Sons made a positive start and were rewarded in the 19th minute when Chris McLaughlin prodded home the opener from a corner.Alistair Roy pounced on a defensive error to double the Championship side's advantage four minutes after the restart.The margin of victory might have been greater, but Tom Walsh's 57th-minute penalty was saved by Graeme Smith, after Greig Spence had been sent off for handling the ball on the line.

Scottish League One leaders Raith claimed a surprise 3-1 win against Championship table-toppers St Mirren to secure a quarter-final spot in the Irn-Bru Cup. It took 63 minutes for the opening goal to arrive as Gavin Reilly got on the end of a neat ball across from Dale Hilson to fire the Buddies in front.But their lead lasted just one minute as Lewis Vaughan equalised for the visitors.Raith went ahead in the 73rd minute as Greig Spence slotted in Vaughan's headed pass and it was 3-1 when Bobby Barr scored with a superb strike from distance.Inverness eased into the last eight with a 3-0 win over Peterhead.Caley Thistle took the lead after just 90 seconds as Liam Polworth let fly from distance and it was 2-0 early in the second half when Riccardo Calder slotted home from a Polworth pass.Young debutant Daniel Mackay sealed a comfortable victory with a stoppage-time header.Falkirk were 2-0 winners against Dunfermline, with Conrad Balatoni volleying them ahead after 19 minutes from a Joe McKee corner.Myles Hippolyte doubled their advantage just before the hour with a fine solo effort, flicking the ball over a defender and racing clear before driving the ball home.Dean Shields was sent off in the sixth minute of stoppage-time for a poor challenge on McKee.Cove Rangers' home tie against Crusaders was temporarily suspended midway through the first half as medics treated an official from the Northern Irish club.Play resumed and the visitors went ahead in the seventh minute of first-half stoppage-time when Michael Carvill turned home a Michael Dougherty pass.The home side's afternoon took another turn for the worse when Scott Ross was sent off for a second bookable offence.And Crusaders took full advantage, with Jamie Glackin making it 2-0 with a close-range finish from Carvill's cross and Declan Caddell sealing a 3-0 win in time added on.Stephen Dobbie scored twice as Queen of the South claimed a 3-1 extra-time win at Montrose.The home side opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when full-back Terry Masson slotted in from close range.Dobbie lashed in an equaliser with three minutes remaining to send the game to an extra 30 minutes, where Queen of the South took control.Birthday boy Lyndon Dykes rounded the goalkeeper to make it 2-1 and Dobbie sealed victory with a shot from a tight angle in the dying seconds.In the first of the later kick-offs, Welsh side TNS cruised to a 4-0 win against Scottish League Two side Elgin.A fine solo goal from Greg Draper opened the scoring, Aeron Edwards headed home a second from a Jamie Mullan pass and it was 3-0 before half-time as Mullan's low drive beat the keeper.Draper's second of the game after the break sealed a convincing win.Dundee United left it late to snatch a 1-0 win at home to Linfield.Substitute Logan Chalmers fired in the rebound after Graham Taylor had seen a shot well saved by Gareth Deane.Taylor had hit a post five minutes earlier, while Aaron Burns spurned Linfield's best chance, heading wide from close range.

Brechin seal play-off final place with dramatic penalty shootout win at Raith

Brechin sealed their place in the Ladbrokes Championship play-off final following a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout win over Raith Rovers.Graeme Smith was the hero for City with the goalkeeper making three penalty saves as the two sides could not be separated after the tie finished 4-4 on aggregate.The semi-final was all-square following a 1-1 draw at Glebe Park on Wednesday evening and it remained a tight affair with the opening 45 minutes finishing goalless.But, six minutes after the restart, Ross Caldwell put the visitors ahead with a neat finish but Jean-Yves M'voto equalised with a powerful header from Declan McManus' free-kick.Alan Trouten looked to have sealed victory for Brechin six minutes from time but McManus popped up in stoppage time to level the scores and force extra-time.Rovers took the lead for the first time in the match through Ryan Hardie in the 103rd minute but a wonderful 25-yard free-kick from Liam Watt with five minutes remaining made it 3-3 to force the tie to penalties.The result relegates Raith and they will play in Ladbrokes League One next season with Brechin facing Alloa in the two-legged play-off final for a place in the Championship.

Declan McManus scored his third goal in as many games to earn Raith a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their play-off clash with League One Brechin at Glebe Park.Brechin had barely threatened when they took the lead on the stroke of half-time.Jean Yves Mvoto brought down striker Andy Jackson in the box and Ross Caldwell stepped up to send the goalkeeper the wrong way from the penalty spot.The Championship visitors improved after the break and hauled themselves level with 20 minutes remaining, McManus scoring with a superb 25-yard free-kick.Raith dominated the closing stages, with Kyle Benedictus seeing a shot fumbled by goalkeeper Graeme Smith, but the home side held on.

Ryan Hardie is at the double for Raith as they see off St Mirren

Ryan Hardie scored a late double as Raith beat bottom side St Mirren 2-0 to end their 15-game winless run in the Ladbrokes Championship.Rovers were forced to field midfielder Ryan Stevenson in goal in last week's 1-0 defeat by Ayr but there was no such drama on Wednesday night as new signing Pavol Penksa took the gloves.A St Mirren win would have moved the strugglers to within three points of their hosts but those hopes were dashed when Hardie headed home Bobby Barr's cross on 74 minutes.Saints pushed forward in search of an equaliser but Hardie settled the game 10 minutes from time when he rounded Billy O'Brien to finish after the goalkeeper had gifted him possession.
