Hunter's pinch-hit homer lifts Texas over Arizona State, forces Game 3

Victoria Hunter hit a go-ahead, two-run pinch-hit home run in the sixth inning to lift Texas to a 4-3 comeback victory over Arizona State in Game 2 of the NCAA super regional on Saturday at McCombs Field in Austin, forcing a decisive third game.

The Longhorns (46-11), who faced elimination, rallied after trailing 2-0. In the fifth inning, after scoring a run on an RBI double from Katie Stewart, they tied the score on an RBI single from Reese Atwood. After falling behind again, Hunter's blast in the sixth provided the winning runs. Citlaly Gutierrez pitched five innings in relief and allowed just one run on three hits while striking out six. Stewart finished 1-for-3, and Atwood was 1-for-4. Ashton Maloney and Kaiah Altmeyer each scored a run for the Longhorns.

Arizona State (45-17) built its lead behind a powerful performance from catcher Samantha Swan. She went 2-for-2 with a walk and drove in two of the team's three runs. Swan put the Sun Devils ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run to center field. Brooklyn Ulrich drove in the game's first run with a double in the second inning.

Texas starter Teagan Kavan lasted just two innings, giving up two runs. For the Sun Devils, starter Meika Lauppe pitched four innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits. Kenzie Brown pitched the final three innings in relief, allowing three runs.
