Pupillo's homer sends Alabama past LSU to WCWS

Alexis Pupillo hit a go-ahead solo home run in the fourth inning, and Alabama defeated LSU 4-1 on a weather-interrupted game Saturday at Rhoads Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to win the super regional and advance to the Women's College World Series.

Pupillo, who went 2-for-4, led off the top of the fourth with a homer to center field, giving Alabama a 2-1 lead. After a single from Audrey Vandagriff and a double by Ambrey Taylor later in the inning, Salen Hawkins delivered a two-out single to left field that scored both runners, pushing the lead to 4-1. Alabama scored its first run in the third inning when Kristen White, who reached on a walk, came around to score on three wild pitches.

The Tigers scored their lone run in the bottom of the third inning. Alix Franklin hit a two-out double and scored on a single from Tori Edwards, tying the score at 1-1. LSU's best threat came in the second, when it loaded the bases with two outs, but a deep fly ball from Jalia Lassiter was caught at the center-field wall to end the inning. Seven LSU players recorded one hit.

LSU starter Jayden Heavener pitched a complete game, allowing four earned runs on six hits. She struck out eight and walked four. Alabama starter Vic Moten worked four innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out seven. Jocelyn Briski pitched three scoreless innings of relief, striking out five and allowing two hits to close out the game. The contest was paused twice for lengthy weather delays due to lightning in the area.
