Nebraska shuts out Grand Canyon, advances to super regionals
Hannah Camenzind's first-inning home run was all the offense Nebraska needed as the Cornhuskers shut out Grand Canyon 1-0 on Sunday at Bowlin Stadium to win the Lincoln Regional and advance to next weekend's super regionals in the NCAA softball tournament.
Nebraska's pitching staff was nearly untouchable. Starter Alexis Jensen pitched five innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out seven. Jordy Frahm pitched two hitless innings of relief with five strikeouts to close out the game.
Camenzind went 1-for-2 with the home run to right field. The Cornhuskers also received a 2-for-2 performance from Samantha Bland, who hit a double. Frahm and Hannah Coor each added a hit.
Lopes starting pitcher Oakley Vickers kept her team in the game, pitching 5⅓ innings and allowing just the one earned run on five hits. She struck out one and walked one. Taryn Batterton recorded the final two outs for Grand Canyon in the sixth.
The Lopes' only hit came from Raegan Holtorf, who went 1-for-3. Grand Canyon left six runners on base and couldn't capitalize on a late opportunity in the seventh inning when it put two runners on via hit-by-pitch. Frahm notched a game-ending strikeout to secure the victory and send the home crowd into a frenzy as Nebraska clinched the right to host a super regional for the first time in program history.
Up next: The NCAA softball tournament continues Thursday with best-of-three super regionals.
