Zero to hero: Socceroos' Robertson scores stunning match-winner after own goal

Socceroos midfielder Alex Robertson has been feted as "Kangaroo" by his Cardiff City teammates after he bounced back from scoring an own goal to lash home a sensational, stoppage-time winner in one of the Championship side's greatest comebacks.

Midfielder Robertson put the ball in his own net just after the hour mark on Saturday in front of his home fans as Cardiff slumped to 4-1 down against visitors Burnley, who are languishing in the relegation zone in the second-tier.

Instead, the Bluebirds launched the most remarkable fightback, with Robertson's own tale of redemption sealed by an extraordinary curling thunderbolt winner in the 94th minute to earn Cardiff the most unlikely 5-4 victory.

The strike left Robertson wheeling away in joy towards the ecstatic City fans who could barely believe they'd scored four goals in 30 minutes to seal the points.

"That was probably one of the best games I've been involved in. It was really nice to be a part of it, and to top it off, to score a winner like that, was amazing," he told reporters at the Cardiff City Stadium.

"Yeah, that was mega. I didn't know it was in the 94th minute, I just remember sliding towards the fans afterwards and then all the boys were on top of me, and I got called 'Kangaroo' a few times, and then I just turned around to the fans, so it was nice.

"I did see the shot curving outside the post, so I kind of knew it was in, because when you start outside the post, it usually does."

For manager Brian Barry-Murphy, Robertson's personal comeback tale seemed to embody Cardiff's battling win, especially as he had been struggling with an Achilles issue coming into the match.

"He's a very young player playing a role with a lot of responsibility as a holding midfielder," Barry-Murphy said.

"But his mentality was symbolic of the team, wanting to attack and create more.

"It's a very memorable day. Even at 4-1 down, we felt we could be dangerous, but we obviously knew of the consequences if we didn't."

Elsewhere in the Championship, Robertson's international teammate Riley McGree saw his side Middlesbrough knocked off the top after they could only draw 0-0 at Watford, while Birmingham City beat Swansea City 2-1 to join Boro on 29 points and edge ahead on goal difference.
