        Bellion keeps Bordeaux in hunt

#INSERT type:image caption:Former Manchester United striker David Bellion was Bordeaux's match-winner END# Bordeaux moved to within a point of Group D leaders Newcastle after a solitary David Bellion goal guided the French side to a narrow victory over Maritimo in the Europa League.Bellion headed home in the 16th minute to give the Ligue 1 team victory, moving them just one point behind Newcastle, who drew 2-2 at Club Brugge. The margin of victory could have been greater with Carlos Henrique hitting the post with their Portuguese visitors creating little of note, although they did have a late goal disallowed for offside. While Bordeaux enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges, they had not threatened the Maritimo goal before taking the lead in the 16th minute.Nicolas Maurice-Belay's cross from the right found Bellion in the six-yard box and he headed the ball into the bottom right of the goal.Their opponents looked to respond immediately with Marcio Rosario's header from Sami's corner blocked by defender Henrique. However, they were creating little of note and it was Bordeaux who looked more likely to score, Cheick Diabate twice threatening, firstly from distance before his right-footed volley was cleared by Marcio Rosario. The hosts almost doubled their lead four minutes before half-time when Henrique's header from the centre of the area hit the post.Given Maritimo were only one goal adrift and in reality needed something from the game, they were offering little.Serra Olberdam, Joao Luiz and Marcio Rosario all had efforts but none that forced Cedric Carasso into anything resembling a save.Ramos Heldon also had a shot cleared and David Simao fired in a long-range effort and they did have the ball in the net five minutes from time but Valentin Roberge was flagged offside after heading home.Heldon's free-kick was cleared by Gregory Sertic in injury-time as Maritimo failed to force an equaliser.

            Honours-even in Funchal

Maritimo and Bordeaux shared the points in a closely-fought Europa League clash which ended 1-1 at the Estadio dos Barreiros in Funchal.Ligue 1 Bordeaux took a first-half lead through Yoan Gouffran, but Maritimo hit back soon after thanks to Frenchman Valentin Roberge and neither side could fashion a winning goal in the remainder of the match. The draw leaves Bordeaux on four points in Group D, now three behind leaders Newcastle, while Portuguese outfit Maritimo moved on to two points as they continue to prop up the standings.Neither goalkeeper was overly troubled in the opening half-hour, with home custodian Romain Salin comfortably gathering Henrique's early header and his Bordeaux counterpart Kevin Olimpa seeing efforts from Joao Guilherme and Leandro go harmlessly wide. However, just when the two keepers may have been thinking they would be in for a quiet night, both were beaten in the space of six minutes following a couple of moments of inspiration.Bordeaux took the lead in the 30th minute when Gouffran capped a superb run down the left by Benoit Tremoulinas with a close-range finish. That advantage did not last long before Maritimo drew level when Ruben Ferreira's brilliant 30-yard effort smashed against the bar and Roberge was alert to the rebound to slot past Olimpa.Another well-struck effort, albeit from a lot closer, then almost gave Maritimo the lead in the 54th minute, but Rafael Miranda's volley was blocked by Mariano. The two custodians were still not being worked much, though, with a mis-hit shot from Bordeaux forward Nicolas Maurice-Belay going wide, while Rodrigo Antonio and Leandro fired similarly unthreatening efforts wide for the hosts as time ticked away.In the final minutes Bordeaux midfielder Landry N'Guemo joined the growing list of players who failed to hit the target with a shot before Salin prevented a late scare for the hosts with a good take from a Mariano ball in.

                Brugge bounce back with victory

Second-half goals from Carlos Bacca and Bjorn Vleminckx helped Club Brugge recover from their opening Europa League Group D defeat as they beat Maritimo 2-0.The Belgian club were humbled 4-0 by Bordeaux two weeks ago and they survived a couple of scares from a game Maritimo side before getting their European adventure back on track.Maritimo looked formidable opponents early on and Rodrigo Antonio do Nascimento struck the bar just after the half-hour mark before a fine individual goal from Bacca and Vleminckx's simple finish sealed victory for Brugge. The hosts top the Jupiler League after winning six and drawing three of their opening nine games but their heavy defeat against Bordeaux brought them back down to earth. They started well, with Victor Vazquez's free-kick from just outside the area forcing a comfortable save from Maritimo goalkeeper Romain Salin.Yet their Portuguese opponents were no shrinking violets and only the crossbar denied Rodrigo Antonio from breaking the deadlock with a 25-yard thunderbolt. It was a let-off for the hosts but they were nearly caught out again after the interval by the Brazilian midfielder, who was this time thwarted by Brugge goalkeeper Bojan Jorgacevic from close range.Maritimo were made to pay for their profligacy when Bacca broke the deadlock in fine style in the 57th minute. The Colombian striker brought the ball under control before sprinting past last man Valentin Roberge and firing past a helpless Salin.Vleminckx missed the target from 12 yards but made amends almost immediately when he doubled Brugge's lead in the 70th minute.Bacca collected Figueras Jordi's long ball before squaring to Vleminckx to tap into an empty net.Danilo Dias nearly halved the deficit but his strike from just outside the area was superbly tipped over the bar by Jorgacevic, who ensured there would be no nervy final moments.
