Commentary
There was late drama at New York/New Jersey Stadium – but crucially, not an equalising goal – as Norway hung on to beat Senegal 3-2, booking their place in the last 32, after outperforming their opponents on xG 2.1 to 1.7, despite a late flurry for the CAF side. The Lions of Teranga managed to see out the early waves of set-piece pressure, but were unable to offer a counter-punch, as the presence of Aursnes and Berge in midfield forced their opponents into hopeful crosses from wide positions. Pedersen’s goal in the 43rd minute gave the Vikings a deserved lead at the break, and it was doubled quickly after the restart, when Haaland received Odegaard’s throughball and finished with aplomb while falling to the ground. Senegal found their footing and an equaliser, eventually, through Ismaila Sarr’s tidy finish, but Haaland was back at it again five minutes later with an opportunistic strike thanks to good work from Berg. Lucky not to concede in the closing stages, Senegal rode their luck and managed to halve the deficit deep in added time with a second Ismaila Sarr goal – this time courtesy of an assist from Jackson, but it was too little too late as they couldn’t find what they needed to claw back a result. The win leaves Norway tied for first in the section ahead of an all-important meeting with France in four days at Boston Stadium, while Senegal’s only chance at qualification is with three points against Iraq at Toronto Stadium on June 26. That concludes our commentary of the 2026 World Cup Group I fixture between Norway and Senegal – we hope you’ve enjoyed it!
FULL-TIME: NORWAY 3-2 SENEGAL
OVER! Jakobs lofts one last outswinging corner-kick into the six-yard box and picks out the head of a leaping Ismaila Sarr, who impressively gets the better of Haaland in the air, but ultimately fails to test Nyland.
With Pedersen off the pitch after the full-back required treatment for a bit of cramp, Jakobs delivers an outswinging corner-kick to the far post, where Ciss attacks it with vigour over the back of Ostigard. The centre-back somehow manages to get his head to the ball, though, glancing it away expertly, before taking the contact to win a free-kick.
The fourth official indicated nine minutes will be added to the end of the half for stoppages, and we're more than halfway through that. Do Senegal have time for an equaliser?
In position to go for goal himself, Jackson picks the unselfish option and plays Ismaila Sarr through to help the Crystal Palace winger secure a brace while picking up an assist in the process.
