They'll need a win against Norway on the final Group I matchday to finish top with a perfect record, yet won't be too fazed, as the formidable French showed their worth either side of a dastardly storm delay that lasted well over two hours. Kylian Mbappe continued on Lionel Messi's scoring trail, hitting the back of the net in the 14th minute with a fizzing left-footed drive from outside the box after being found simply by Michael Olise on the right. After the belated break under the storm clouds, France looked on the bright side as they received a gift from the Iraqi defence. A botched short goal-kick found its way to Ousmane Dembele, and his selfless squaring of the ball enabled Mbappe to slot in his 16th World Cup goal. Now equal with Miroslav Klose, and just two off the legendary Messi, all-time, Mbappe still sits one behind him in this tournament. Rounding off the day, though, it'd be Dembele who found himself in the spotlight, as he finally got on a World Cup scoresheet on his 20th appearance at a major tournament, firing into the bottom-left brilliantly after being effortlessly worked through by Olise. France were far superior tonight, bettering Iraq as they worked coolly above their 2.38 xG. The Lions of Mesopotamia showed great bravery with the likes of Ali Al Hamadi and Zidane Iqbal catching the eye, yet ultimately fell foul of yet more mistakes as they trundled below their 0.6 xG.
