Commentary
The full-time whistle goes then, and France improve massively after the break to record a 3-1 victory over Senegal in a barnstorming Group I opener in East Rutherford. Deschamps' side were miles off it in the first half, but there was a marked improvement after the break. Mbappe was left seething when controversially denied a penalty after being clattered by Mane, but the Real Madrid ace moved level with Giroud as France's all-time leading scorer when firing past Mendy from Olise's exquisite pass. Substitute Barcola then made a wonderful darting run to meet Rabiot's equally wonderful throughball, before expertly clipping over Mendy. Substitute Mbaye gave Senegal hope when smashing home during injury time, but Mbappe's sensational long-ranger saw him make history by moving ahead of Giroud on 58 to seal the points. It was a case of what might have been for Senegal – whose xG of 0.5 was inferior to France's 1.89 – who saw Jackson clatter the post and Sarr shoot woefully over the top at the end of the first half. But that's why France are so heavily favoured, they have a star-studded team and can step through the gears when really needed. Les Bleus' next Group I assignment comes against Iraq in Philadelphia on Monday, while Senegal are back at the same venue to face Norway. Thanks for joining us folks, until next time!
FULL-TIME: FRANCE 3-1 SENEGAL
CLOSE! Oh dear, how did that stay out? Mbaye's cross comes off the foot of Tchouameni, and almost squirms over Maignan!

GOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLL! WHAT A RIPOSTE FROM MBAPPE! AND IT'S A HISTORIC GOAL! That is quite magnificent from Mbappe, who picks up the ball, spins, and slams one into the top-left corner from 30 yards! He now stands alone on 58 goals as France's all-time leading goalscorer, moving past Giroud! France lead 3-1!
It was good work from Iliman Ndiaye to pick out Mbaye, and he gets the assist.

GOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLL! A LIFELINE FOR SENEGAL! It's a wonderful effort from Mbaye, who sits down his defender, drives into the area and smashes his effort into the goal. Maignan gets a hand on it and, in truth, probably should save it! Is there time for an equaliser? France still lead 2-1.
