Fantasy baseball rest-of-season rankings: Yoan Moncada returns with a bang

Chicago White Sox 3B Yoan Moncada broke out as a legitimate fantasy star during the 2019 season when he hit .315 and slugged 25 home runs, and he looked like he was going to be a future top-30 fantasy option. We expected more than 10 stolen bases, but certainly could not complain about the overall production. Plus, since he was only 24 years old, most believed Moncada still had better statistical seasons ahead. Perhaps they still are, if Moncada's 2022 debut weekend is any early indication.

Moncada missed the first month of the season with an oblique strain and he played his first five games this past week, homering twice against the New York Yankees, drawing a few walks and again handling the coveted No. 2 spot in Chicago's lineup. Moncada, still available in 25% of ESPN standard leagues, hit a disappointing .253 over the 2020-2021 seasons with only 20 home runs and three steals over 196 games and 847 PA, but he walked so much and hit so high in the lineup that he still scored myriad runs. He was probably a bit overrated for roto leagues, though.

Regardless, now that Moncada is back playing, he moves up in our rest-of-season roto rankings (although not into the top 100 just yet). After all, the lone fantasy category in which Moncada was above average last season was runs scored. Weekend homers off tough right-handed reliever Jonathan Loaisiga and emerging lefty Jordan Montgomery are a nice start for the veteran switch-hitter who hit only one home run across the entire months of May and June last season. He should eventually find his way into being a top-100 roto option -- and certainly he should be universally rostered for now. We will definitely be tracking his performance in future weeks.
